Shadows and Light!

Shadows and light cannot be separated. Be weary of falling under the spell of stories of good and bad; or how things should or should not be.

We had an assignment to look at a rock in the full sunlight. No matter how nor when, it was hard to tell where the rock began or ended or a shadow began or ended. More and fewer than two opposites were needed to account for the rock/shadow, which could be considered ‘one’. Thinking in contrasts is a quality of mind which neither aptly describes reality nor applies to presence. Namaste.

We also need black and white in order to see color through a prism! The Tao yin and yang symbol has a spot of white in the black and a spit of black in the white. Neither exists without the other.

Joe, you asked if we use our heart and instinct to determine action. I believe we do as when we are in stillness, we are acknowledging what is and taking action from heart space. I watch a two year old girl. The other day, she was convinced that there was a gorilla hiding in her house and she was scared. Heart and instinct, helped me take action. Instead of me trying to push away her fear or passing it off after a simple gorilla search, I worked to empower her to face it as it was likely to appear in her dreams. I told her that she could tell the gorilla to go away. As Keshav reminds us, we can change things. We practiced telling the gorilla to go away. I even used a gorilla photo on my phone “go away” when she whispered those words. I’ve often looked at nightmares as bad but from the perspective of this quote, I can see how facing them –
facing the fear they represent is empowering. Bringing light into the darkness.

I remember when we used to do an exercise of looking into each other’s eyes. Eventually my partner’s face would start morphing into many different faces, all composed of shadow and light. And it is true, there would be no face at all if it weren’t for shadow and light. Without light there can be no shadow. And vice-versa.

my capacity to remove a title from those thought patterns is essential in letting go.*

Visually I see this as Black and White which cannot be separated and it’s those Grey areas that can be so interesting! Like a prism separating the light into so many colors we see which also cannot be separated. Joe when I’m painting it’s true that both my heart and instinct determine when I feel what’s Done is done and it just feels right. Oddly sometimes it Tastes right but I’ve learned to go with it! I was telling Keshav that painting my self portrait reveals a lot more then I see ordinarily, the last time I was really judging my looks, that it wasn’t me! But like the shadow it truly is. Namaste.

In the world of form, from the perspective of a separate self, I do not have the wisdom to know if what is happening is “good” or “bad.” How many times have I labeled something as bad and further down the road I see it was a necessary lesson, or a necessary detour to take me to some new thing? When in awareness I am totally unable to label any moment or thing as good or bad. That is such a peaceful place, such a fearless place. It is the idea that something should not be that creates the dissonance, the suffering. Better to see that all things are as they should be, no mater how much mind may disagree. And as our teacher often says, once we realize the truth, mind is happy to follow.

Do we use our heart and instinct to determine action? The more I have developed my awareness the less I connect with thought patterns that appear “bad”. However, I have also noticed my capacity to remove a title those thought patterns to be essential in letting go.
